I Found a Product on 1688. How Do I Actually Buy It From Overseas?

Finding the product is the easy part

1688 is mainly built for China’s domestic market. That is why overseas buyers often find products there at prices that look lower than export-facing marketplaces. But finding a listing is not the same as completing an international purchase. Before money changes hands, you still need to understand who the supplier is, what the real minimum order quantity is, whether the quoted price applies to your specification, and how the goods will ultimately leave China.

Check the supplier before you focus on price

A low unit price is useful only if the seller can actually deliver the product you need. Look at the company information, main product range, operating history, available factory or business details, sample options, lead time and customization capability. A seller does not have to be a factory to be useful. A trading company may be a better fit when you need several products from different factories. The goal is not to chase the label “factory”; it is to understand who is responsible for your order.

The listed price is not your landed cost

The number on the product page may exclude domestic delivery in China, samples, custom printing, packaging, inspection, consolidation and international shipping. That means a product that looks much cheaper on screen may not remain much cheaper after the full purchasing process is included. Compare total cost, not just the first unit price you see.

Use samples to reduce uncertainty

For a meaningful order, a sample can confirm material, dimensions, color, workmanship, packaging and customization. It also gives both sides a clearer reference before mass production. A good sample still does not guarantee that every unit in the final batch will match it, so the sample should become part of the production and inspection reference.

Plan consolidation and shipping early

Many buyers source the main product, packaging and accessories from different suppliers. If each small order is shipped overseas separately, cost and coordination can become messy. A common approach is to receive the goods at one China-side location, check the shipments, combine them where appropriate and arrange international shipping from there.

The practical takeaway

1688 can be useful when you want access to China’s domestic supply market and you are prepared to manage the China-side work. If you only compare the page price and ignore communication, payment, inspection, consolidation and shipping, the “cheaper” option can become the more complicated one.
