The price difference is real, but it has a reason
Alibaba.com is designed for international trade. Suppliers there often spend more on export sales teams, international communication, trade assurance tools, overseas marketing, export packaging and international logistics support. 1688 is primarily a domestic wholesale marketplace. A lower displayed price can therefore reflect a different service environment, not simply a larger supplier profit margin.
Alibaba is often easier for a first overseas order
If you are buying from China for the first time, need English communication, want a straightforward export quotation and prefer the supplier to handle more of the international process, Alibaba.com can be the simpler route. Paying a slightly higher unit price may still be rational when it reduces mistakes, communication cost and coordination work.
1688 becomes more attractive when the China-side process is under control
1688 can make more sense when you are sourcing several SKUs, buying domestic-standard products, comparing many Chinese suppliers or already have someone in China who can communicate, receive goods, inspect orders and combine shipments. In those cases, the lower domestic-market pricing can be more meaningful because the missing service layers are handled elsewhere.
Customization changes the comparison
A product that is cheap on 1688 as a standard item may become much less different in price once you add custom color, logo printing, special packaging, certification or a small production run. For OEM or ODM work, supplier capability and execution matter more than the cheapest catalog price.
Choose based on the order, not the platform name
There is no universal winner. For a small first order, Alibaba.com may offer the cleaner path. For repeated purchasing, multiple suppliers or strong China-side coordination, 1688 may provide more room to optimize cost. The right question is not “Which platform is cheaper?” but “Which platform makes the whole order easier and more economical for this particular purchase?”
